Making a homemade popper stopper

Rencently I was asked how to build a homemade popper stopper or windscreen for microphones. We all hate that pesky pop in the mic that we hear when we are recording. I searched around a bit and came across a few home recording sites that have instructions on this very thing.

This is an excellent article on a band who took the Do-it-Yourself approach and recording their own CD themselves using their home recording setup. A lot of bands these days are definately finding it easier than in the past to get an album done.

Judging from the review of this book, I think it is something that I will want to pick up sometime in the near future. It mentions something that I have always had an interest in, making my electronic music sound not so electronic. As well, it apparently gives some great music arrangement tips, mixing electronic instruments, and much more.

How Digital Recording Works

Basically, whenever you go from analog to digital, you're encoding the real world into separate pieces called bits. If you had only 1 bit, the sound would be either at maximum volume or zero...not too useful. Adding more bits gives you more refinement of detail and dynamic range (the difference between the loudest and softest material). So with 24 bits, you get more than with 16. In case you're not up on powers of 2, 16 bits gives you 65,536 levels and 24 bits gives you 16,777,216. Quite a bit more (all together now: groan!), but don't forget that all audio CDs are recorded at 16 bits and they sound pretty good.

Tascam released new mic bundled with audio interface

Tascam pretty much invented home recording but they have not been known for their microphones. Now they have announced their very first condenser microphone, the LD-74.

This is some great information from About.com. Some of it is fairly common sense but it never hurts to be reminded every now and then of these things.

No matter what type of music you record, or how simple or complex your studio is, there are a few tips to keep in mind when you're starting your recording project. Remember, these aren't just beginner's tips; I know many recording engineers - myself included - who've been doing this for years who live by these same rules!
